Meet Andrew Thompson, a Mississauga resident who overcame a number of childhood social and learning challenges (the result of an intellectual disability) in his ’20s. Thanks to a firm support network of family, friends and Community Living Mississauga, Thompson found the courage to speak out publicly about his disability, all the while completing a college program and working his way up to a rewarding career. Community Living is a not-for-profit organization that provides lifestyle and workplace support services to over 1,700 intellectually disabled people in the city and their families.

“From War to Love with Kim Phuc” tells the story of a unique friendship between Mississauga community activist, Liesa Cianchino, and Kim Phuc Phan Thi, the woman known to many as ”the girl in the picture” from the iconic Pulitzer Prize winning photograph taken during the Vietnam War.

The February issue of Mississauga Life also featured my article “Lessons in Love”, a story that profiled the philanthropic efforts of Haroon Khan and the city’s Pakistani community. From founding a school for underprivileged children in Karachi to organizing flood relief supplies to be sent to Pakistan last fall, Khan is committed to carrying on his family’s legacy of charity.

Updates: FASHION Magazine and Mississauga Life Magazine

For the past few months, I have been interning at FASHION Magazine and writing for the newly launched Mississauga Life Magazine. You can also find my men’s fashion articles in Knew Daily once a month.

My first article in Mississauga Life looks at what a group of community volunteers at The Compass outreach centre are doing to banish the stigma surrounding homeless and low-income families living in Port Credit and Clarkson – comfortable, largely middle to upper class neighbourhoods where poverty is often hidden from sight. The article is available online here and you can also find it in the January print edition out now.

As the editorial intern at FASHION, my responsibilities include fact-checking articles, editing copy, writing for the online magazine and for the “Contributors” section of the print edition. It has been a wonderful experience so far and I hope to eventually work as a magazine editor later on in my career. Here’s a peek at some of my recent work on www.fashionmagazine.com:

Calgary Stampede animal rights article on Rabble.ca

For years, animal rights activists have been protesting controversial rodeo events like calf-roping and steer wrestling at the Calgary Stampede. This article looks at some of the new safety rules Stampede officials implemented in 2010 to increase the welfare of animals who compete in chuckwagon races and rodeo competitions. Despite the changes, protesters want the rodeo to be banned altogether and are taking their cause a step further – urging the public to boycott corporate sponsors of the Stampede rodeo.
